Hauptmann Prollius.

Later that morning an exhausted lieutenant from the 27th Reserve Infantry Regiment in the Fleury sector brought the news that the French assault was imminent. In vain Prollius sent out a last message: ‘Weak garrison holding fort until reinforcements arrive’. There was no contact with the outside and through the smoke and fumes of the continuing bombardment, nothing at all could be seen.

The French attack

The assault had been fixed for 24 October. From his headquarters at the Moulin de Regret, General Mangin wrote to his wife on 23 October

‘Everything is ready. Only rain can stop us... The meteorologist has forecast clouds and possible showers but he is a pessimist. Let us hope. It would be a real pity to have to postpone the operation’.
